Many people are quite surprised to learn just how many Philippines sex scandals that there really are. When one thinks of prostitution, the red-light districts of Bangkok are typically the places that comes to mind. Well, although sex definitely is everywhere in Thailand, it’s a lot more organized, refined and professional than in the Philippines. Yes, there are places in the Philippines that operate by the same concept that you’ll find in Bangkok however, the entire topic in general is much more scandalous.
From male order brides to child sex trafficking to pornography, you will find an abundance of it in the Philippines. Sure, you can have Safe Sex in the Philippines if you go to one of the many beer bars, GoGo clubs or massage parlors that are available and do things the right way. Unfortunately, this is not enough for many locals or tourists; this is where Philippines sex scandals come in.
Prostitution
There are approximately one-half million prostitutes in the Philippines which includes not only women but also males, transvestites and children. In fact, a study reported 18 August 1998 in Kyodo News suggested that there were at least 75,000 children who were forced into prostitution because of poverty. It is believed that this number has grown significantly every year. There are even reports of children prostituting for water and food for themselves and/or their families. It is also suggested by IPS that nearly 75 percent of all prostitutes in Angeles City are underage.
The top five locations that contribute to vast amount of Philippines sex scandals include Angeles City, Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao and Puerto Galera. Interestingly, while many people assume that tourists who come to find Girls in the Philippines are the problem, they’re actually not! Filipinos are indeed the primary users of native prostitutes. Studies suggest that tourists are more cautious about age when hiring prostitutes however, Filipino men could care less if she’s 15 or 25.
An alarming statistic that should be noted when exploring sex scandals in the Philippines is that children between the ages of 11 and 15 say that they were either recruited by friends or their relatives introduced them to the profession.
The Indian Express has noted that tourists who contribute to underage sex come mainly from the United States and Europe. It is noted by the Associated Press though that most of these men who contribute to Philippines sex scandals have no idea they are having an encounter with an underage prostitute.
Trafficking
Girls in the Philippines aren’t only behind scandals in their own country though. It is estimated that several hundred thousand Filipino women have actually been trafficked into the prostitution industry in Japan. Of course, Japan isn’t the only country to be involved though!
According to the Manila Chronicle on 31 May 1995, 150 Filipino women were sold to night club operators from African countries for $5,000 each. Four of these girls were rescued from the embassy after seeking help from officials in Nigeria.
It is said that Filipino women are so vulnerable to trafficking simply because of the Asian economic crisis. These females are uneducated and literally have no one to intercept, especially if their families are pushing them into the lifestyle because of poverty. Although trafficking laws do actually exist, they are certainly not always enforced, especially if you have the money to encourage heads to look the other way
It is even estimated that there are at least 5,000 Filipino women sold annually as brides to the United States alone. Although tourists can go and have a good time, it is recommended to always pick up your dates from reputable bars. Otherwise, there is a very good chance that you too will be contributing to Philippines sex scandals.
